If you’re traveling near the border of a country outside the EU or your selected destinations, your phone may automatically connect to a network outside your plan area.
For example, you’re on holiday in Cyprus (covered by "Roam Like at Home"), but your device might pick up the network in nearby Turkey, which is not. This can lead to unexpected charges without your knowledge.
To avoid this, you can set your device to stay connected only to networks within your selected destinations. Here’s how to do it:
On Android:
-
Open Settings > Network & Internet > Internet.
-
Go to Settings within the Internet menu.
-
Scroll down to Network and toggle Automatically select network off.
-
Manually choose the network you want to stay connected to.
On iPhone:
-
Go to Settings > Mobile service.
-
Under NAKED tap Network selection.
-
Toggle the Automatic option so it’s off.
-
Manually choose the network you want to stay connected to.
This way, your device will stay connected only to the network you choose, preventing accidental roaming and unexpected charges.
Calling numbers for services with special tariffs (such as airline customer support, insurance, or entertainment SMS) in Germany may be free or cost a small fee. However, when roaming, these calls and messages can lead to unexpected additional charges. When traveling by boat or airplane, your device may automatically connect to a non-terrestrial satellite network, where roaming rates are often significantly higher than standard regulated rates.
To avoid these unexpected costs:
- Disable roaming on your device before travel.
- Or, activate airplane mode in your settings to prevent unintended connections to costly satellite networks.
