What does excessive use of roaming mean?

Basically, your roaming use is considered excessive if it’s higher than your typical usage in Germany over the past four months.

To clarify, we keep an eye on your activity in "Roam Like at Home" countries over the last four months to see if both of these are happening at the same time:

  • Your data use in these countries is more than in Germany.
  • You spend more days only in these countries than you do in Germany.

If both are true, extra charges might apply based on set rates.

But don’t worry — we always send a warning SMS before any additional charges kick in. These surcharges only apply to future roaming, not what you’ve already used.

How will I know if I’m using too much roaming?

If your usage looks like it’s exceeding the fair use policy under EU rules, we’ll send you an SMS and/or email. You’ll then have two weeks to adjust your habits — meaning, during that time, you should be spending more days and using more data in Germany than abroad.

If you make changes within those two weeks, we’ll confirm that everything’s back within reasonable limits so you can keep using your plan without extra costs.

If not, we’ll notify you that additional charges are starting. Data will be billed at 0.18 cents per MB (including VAT), so if you use 1GB after the alert, it’ll cost about €1.88. SMS costs 0.35 cents each, outgoing calls are 2.26 cents per minute, and incoming calls are 0.23 cents per minute.

When can I use "Roam Like at Home" benefits again without additional charges?

At the start of each month, we review your roaming activity. If everything’s within normal limits, we’ll let you know that extra charges have stopped. If not, the surcharges will continue until your usage is back to reasonable levels.

If I get a data surcharge for excessive roaming — does that reduce my regular data allowance?

Nope! The extra costs only apply to your roaming data. Your German data allowance stays intact.

If I go on holiday in the summer to a "Roam Like at Home" country, will I run into issues with excessive roaming?

No worries! These limits are just to prevent continuous or excessive roaming use — short trips or holidays won’t cause issues.

If I move to live in another European country, will I get charged extra?

Yes, if your stay is long and your roaming use is high, you might get alerts for excessive consumption. If you don’t return to Germany and keep using a lot of data abroad, additional charges could apply.

If I travel outside "Roam Like at Home" countries, do these limitations apply?

These rules only apply within EU countries with "Roam Like at Home". In other places outside the EU, standard roaming prices apply regardless of your tariff in Germany.
